One of the Drudge Report headlines from yesterday reads:

NEW YORK CITY MAYOR FUMED OVER 'SMOKING' ON STAGE AT STONES CONCERT

What with the quotation marks around 'SMOKING' and the over-the-top reaction, I naturally assumed that the Stones were smoking something a bit more illegal -- a bit Stonier -- than tobacco. Apparently not.

A metaphor for several decades regarding bands hitting all their chords well, and exciting the audience, has been that they are "smoking," even they are not, literally, doing so, I gravely inform you.

You are now further equipped to be "hep" and "cool." You're welcome.

You know,if it weren't for the asthma thing, I'd take up smoking just to spite 'em. My Italian friends are already enjoying the use of the term 'fascisti della salute'.
