Various webloggers have reported that Michael Bellesisles has had his Bancroft Prize revoked. What I want to know is whether he's going to have to repay the $4,000 that comes with the prize. I certainly hope so.
Posted by Dr. Weevil at December 14, 2002 10:35 PMYes, the huckster got yanked.
Sadly, the money has already been invested into his next project: "How anti-Americanism is good for America!".
Coming to a bookstore near you.
Posted by: Steve on December 15, 2002 01:34 AMAccording to a 12/13 AP story printed in NYTimes, Minn. Strib, etc.:
"Columbia has asked Bellesiles to return the prize money, $4,000."
Posted by: maltese on December 15, 2002 06:06 PMThanks, maltese: I'm very glad to hear that.
Posted by: Dr. Weevil on December 15, 2002 07:33 PMPerhaps he'll claim to have invested it in UA stock, and that all he can send back now is $428.
Say, isn't he contibuting to the unemployment problem in the US now?
Posted by: charles austin on December 18, 2002 05:53 PMSorry I didn't mark down the reference, but I saw a recent interview where Bellesiles was talking about getting a high school teaching job, if he could.
Mayhaps in creative writing?
